Chronicle (Adelaide) Saturday 2 January 1897 Wallaroo. December 29. Dr. John Gosse, of Wallaroo, who had been unwell for the past few weeks, died at his residence at half-past 1 o'clock this morning. Dr. Marten, of Adelaide, attended him on Sunday last and Dr. Harbison has been in constant attendance. Dr. Gosse, who was 51 years of age, leaves a widow and six children. The Funeral, which will be a private one, takes place to-morrow. Wallaroo, December 30. The news of the death of Dr. John Gosse, of Wallaroo, was received with great regret by his numerous friends. He had not been in good health for the past few weeks, and lately had to take to his bed. He was first attended by Dr. Harbinson and other local doctors, but on Sunday last Dr. Marten, of Adelaide, met them in consultation. Nothing could be done to stay the course of the disease, however, and the doctor passed away at 1.30 a.m. on Tues day. Dr. Gosse, who was 50 years old last January, was born near London, and for a time lived at Poole, in Dorset. He was educated in England, and studied medicine at St. Bartholomew's Hospital, London, becoming a member of the Royal College of Surgeons, England. He arrived in South Australia in 1870 by the ship Investigator, 'which came to the colonies to lay the cable between Melbourne and Launceston. He commenced the practice of his profession at Mount Pleasant, and afterwards removed to Moonta, where he remained for three years, and then went to Kadina for three years, after wards settling at Wallaroo. He was appointed medical officer of the Wallaroo Hospitaf, which office he held with considerable success up to the time of his death. The doctor did not take a leading part in public matters, the little time at his disposal preventing this, but he was always ready to assist in any movement for the good of Wallaroo or the district. For several vears he occupied the office of president of the Wallaroo Regatta. He was also a member ot the institute committee, president of the cricket club, an officer of the late military force, and a past master of the Princess Royal lodge of Masons. He was appointed a justice of the peace several years ago. Dr. Gosse lad been health officer for the town of Wallaroo for about 16 years. As medical officer of the local hospital he gave universal satisfaction, his skill and ability ns a surgeon having been most favorably commented on. He was a nephew of the late Dr. W, Gosse, of Adelaide, and a cousin of the late Dr. Charles Gosse. He leaves a widow and six children, for whom great sympathy is felt. Only a short time ago Dr. Gosse took into partnership Dr. Harbinson, who was appointed acting medical officer of the hospital during the late doctor's leave of absence; and a very strong desire is expressed that Dr. Harbinson may now be appointed to the vacant office. The funeral took place at 4 p.m. this afternoon.
John married Mary BENNET [7204] [MRIN: 2497], daughter of John BENNET [6963] and Margaret Venning HARVEY [6964], on 4 Mar 1874 in St John's Church, Mt Pleasant, South Australia.
