WWMcL Thwaites worked in Tasmania in the early/mid 1860's, left Hobart for Adelaide in 1865 and wed Ellen Whitfield.
Walter was arrested in Edithburg, Sth Aust in January 1877, gaoled briefly in Adelaide and extradited to NSW for Bigamy.
Walter deserted Ellen after the birth of their daughter Barbara Jane, and sailed to West Aust with his father. By September 1870 he was operating a studio in Queanbeyan, NSW.
On 2nd May 1871 Walter married Margaret Agnes Anne Francis (nee Green) a widow, born 8 December 1835 Halifax, Nova Scotia, daughter of William Green and Margaret Gray. In 1864 Margaret opened a school, which became Queanbeyan Public School.
Admissions to Adelaide Gaol Vol F Page 34 :- W W Thwaites (sic) was admitted to Adelaide Gaol on remand warrant (ie he had not been sentenced) on 9th January 1877. The charge was that he had unlawfully married Margaret Anne Francis, his former wife Ellen Whitfield (sic) being then alive. He was committed to gaol by the police (magistrates) court.
Walter married Ellen WHITFIELD [3883] [MRIN: 4490], daughter of William WHITFIELD [12104] and Barbara WILKIE [12816], on 23 Sep 1865 in Manse, Inverbrackie, South Australia. (Ellen WHITFIELD [3883] was born on 16 Aug 1847 in Inverbrackie, South Australia, baptised on 23 Oct 1850 in St James Church, Blakiston, South Australia, died on 25 Sep 1922 in Eastwood, Adelaide, South Australia and was buried on 26 Sep 1922 in West Tce Cemetery, Adelaide.). The cause of her death was Senility.
