No. 11.--Cyril Poole.

PROBABLY the oldest driver in the 1938 Albany Grand Prix will be Cyril Poole, who first drove in competitive events back in 1913. It is 36 years since he first handled a car, and he has taken an active interest in motoring ever since. He drove in sporting events at Lake Perkolilli in 1923, during the days when the Royal Automobile Club ran a reliability trial to Kalgoorlie. He has had several successes in hill climbs and other sporting events around the metropolitan area. Poole's car is a sporting-touring type four-cylinder Bugatti, with an engine capacity of just under 1,500 c.c. An unusual feature of the engine is that it has three valves per cylinder-one inlet and two exhaust. Until the advent of the Alfa-Romeos, Mercedes, and Auto Unions to Grand Prix racing, the Bugatti was one of the leading racing cars of Europe.

Cyril Poole was one of the founders of Western Australia's motor sport.
Born in 1889, by 1913 he'd set up his first car dealership in Perth, and was participating in many events. In 1927 he purchased Perth's first Bugatti, one of the most spectacular sporting cars of its era. This Type 37 model became very well known in WA, remaining here until the 1980s.
In 1929 Poole bought a second Bugatti, a Type 40 which he had fitted with a body to his own design. This car was also used successfully in many motor sport events. Poole kept this Bugatti until his death in 1975.
To honour this great pioneer the Sports Car Club Inc. (WA) is holding the inaugural Cyril Poole South West Tour in WA, from November 13-17 this year, marking the club's 10th anniversary. The event has attracted a capacity field of evocative sporting cars, many of which are coming from the Eastern States especially for the event.
The famous French sporting marque Bugatti will feature strongly with half a dozen participating. Among them is a magnificent and well-known Type 35 coming from Melbourne. When it was new, this particular example was the first Bugatti to win a Grand Prix in England.
Other cars visiting Perth for the event include examples of Hispano Suiza (an impressive 1924 8-litre Bolougne model), 1923 Vauxhall 30-98 and 1936 Delage D6/70 Le Mans Coupe. Local entries include a variety of cars spanning a pair of supercharged MG J2s to an impressively named Theophile Schneider.
Another local car of interest is a Speed Six Bentley that began life as a police car in Western Australia. Two other vintage Bentleys are among the millions of dollars worth of cars joining the run.
The five-day rally will start in Fremantle, on Thursday November 13 heading to Margaret River. Afterwards, the eastern states Bugatti drivers intend sightseeing further south, before heading home across the Nullarbor - a real adventure in any vehicle, and a major challenge in these open, pre-war sports cars. Spectators are invited to 'The Start', at The Fremantle Italian Club on Marine Terrace from 08:30a.m. when Mayor Peter Tagliaferri will flag away the cars.
Nine cars from interstate arrived on 4th November and until Wednesday 12th will be secured at the Motor Museum of WA '96 Whiteman Park, on display to the public.
An opportune time to pay fitting tribute to the late Maurice Brockwell, by attending his Memorial Rally on Sunday 9th November, which finishes at the museum - then view these spectacular cars.
