Land Sale Of Historic Interest On Friday
A land sale of historical importance will take place at Mount Pleasant on Friday next, when 5,378 acres in the estate of the late Thomas Matthews will be offered in 31 lots, ranging from 38 to 320 acres. Thomas Matthews arrived in South Aus tralia in December, 1839, his wife and family following him 17 months later. He immediately started acquiring land, first at the source of the Brownhill Creek, then at Coromandel Valley, Scott's Creek, and finally at South Rhine. The remains of his original two-storey home, erected in 1849 after the style of an English farm house, and which he named 'Hurd's Hill,' is still to be seen at Coromandel Valley. Thomas Matthews died In 1861, and under his will the bulk of his land could not be sold until the last direct descendant had died. This was John Hurd Matthews, who died in April, this year. Thus this land has been in the hands of the Matthews family for a century, and since the death of the owner has remained intact for 73 years, during which period tenants have occupied the 5,378 acres that are now to be placed on the market. Apart from those who desire to purchase the land the sale is sure to be attended by a large number of people interested in so unique a fixture.
