Our Sainted Dead
Mr. Robert Smart.
The words of Job v., 26, "Thou shall come to thy grave in a full age, like a "shock of corn cometh in in its season," were verified in the life and death of Bro. Robert Smart. Born in Glasgow in 1828, with his parents he arrived in South Australia eleven years later. For forty years he resided at Golden Grove. The remaining period of thirty-six years was spent at Narridy. Sixty-one years ago he entered into a partnership which was ideal in its character. The affection between husband and wife grew more beautiful as the years passed on. It was an outstanding fact in the life of the home. Of a family of eleven ten survive.
In 1879 Bro. Smart became a- member of the Presbyterian Church, the Church of his fathers. Fifteen years ago he united in Methodist membership. His life was characterized by a marked unobtrusiveness and unquestionable sincerity. His children were trained to reverence all that was best, and through long years parents led the way to the house of God. The period of weakness and pain which preceded the end was brief. On the evening of August 16 the angel of deliverance entered the home, and a long, useful, and honoured life found its consummation in the spiritual sphere from which Time had wrought out a work of preparation. At graveside and "In Memoriam" service large numbers were in attendance to pay their last tributes to departed-worth.
