Chronicle Thursday 9 January 1947 Death Notice: BROADBENT. - On January 4, at Daws Road Hospital, Rowland, dearly loved husband of Millicent May Broadbent, Fourth St., Gawler South, dear father of Betty (Mrs. Ramsay), and Ruth (Mrs. de Vidas). Aged 66 years. Resting. (Late 11th Field Ambulance, 1st A.I.F.).
Bunyip (Gawler) Friday 10 January 1947 Passing of Mr. Rowland Broadbent The death took place at the Daws Road Military Hospital, Adelaide, on January 4th., of Mr. Rowland Broadbent, a well-known and highly respected resident of Gawler South. He suffered for years from war disabilities, when as a member of the 11th Field Ambulance, 1st. A.I.F., he was gassed and broken on the battle fields of the 1914-18 war. Great tragedy is associated with his death, as his wife (Millicent May) had to enter the Memorial Hospital, Adelaide, for a serious operation, and as there was no one at home to attend to his needs Mr. Broadbent was removed to Daws Road Hospital. There is left the widow and two daughters - Betty (Mrs. Ramsay) and Ruth (Mrs. deVidas). Prior to entering the war to serve his Country, Mr. Broadbent was associated with the Methodist Church and after the war was stationed at Gawler West as an ordained Minister. Close study affecting his eye sight Mr. Broadbent resigned and joined with Mr. Bert Withers in the establishment of the motor garage and repair shop in Murray Street and the firm did great business in the sale of Dodge cars. Here he remained from 1919 to 1931. Illness, however made him give up and for a time poultry occupied his attention, his yards being on Lyndoch Road. This, too, became too much for his ill-health and for several years the deceased lived at Gawler South in quiet retreat. He was 66 years at his death. The remains were privately interred at Willaston on Monday.
