The Advertiser Wednesday 13 December 1939 RECORD ENROLMENT AT ADELAIDE HIGH SCHOOL Old Scholars Association Bachelor of Arts - . . . . . and Malcolm Leslie Strange.
The Advertiser (Adelaide, SA : 1931 - 1954) Thu 11 Jul 1940 Page 13 "Pirates Of Penzance" By Student Teachers: "The Pirates of Penzance" was chosen for presentation last night by students of the Adelaide Teachers' College for their annual production. It was the first of a four nights' season at Australia Hall in aid of the Red Cross and Fighting Forces Comforts Fund. Mr. Alva Penrose (supervisor of music for the Education Department) was producer. Colorful grouping of 40 strong in both male and female choruses was a strong feature. The cast had the support of three former college students for the leading roles-lan McMutrie as the Pirate King. Howard Pfitzner as Frederic, and Stan Edmonds as the modern major-general. Ian McMutrie's Pirate King was an excellent study in bombast, aided by his very fine singing voice. Howard Pfitz ner was a typical Savoyard Frederic, making the most ot nis vocal opportunities. In his bearing and exaggerated generalissimo character Stan Edmonds delighted the audience, and made up in mannerisms his lack of vocal powers. Margaret Wollaston cast as the heroine, was not the traditional vocal Mabel, but her voice though lacking in volume was nevertheless true and sweet, especially in that favorite number "Poor Wand'ring One." Valuable support was given by Malcolm Strange as the Pirate Kings lieutenant. Samuel; Hugh Fitzgerald (sergeant of the police). Pat Torpy (the pirate maid of all work), and Joy Vawser. Mona James and Glenda Penrose as General Stanley's other daughters.

Three performances will be given, on Thurs day, Friday, and Saturday, May 8, 9, and 10. All profits will be divided equally between the Fighting Forces Comforts Fund and the Red Cross. Special settings will be painted and constructed by Mr. O. V. Parkington, and Mr. Penrose will conduct the or chestra of 16 professional musicians. Principal players will be Stanley Edmonds (the Duke of Plaza-Toro). Malcolm Strange (Luiz), Hugh Fitz gerald (Don Alhambra), Ross Hayward (Marco), Ian McMutrie (Giuseppe), Myra Lillywhite (Casilda), Joy Vawser (the Duchess of Plaza-Toro), Margaret Woollaston (Gianetta), and Pauline Winter (Tessa). Mr. McMutrie's fine baritone voice should make a great deal more of the role of Giuseppe than we generally hear in either professional or amatuer companies.
