General Notes:
The Advertiser Saturday 30 August 1947 CYCLIST DIES OF INJURIES At an inquest yesterday the City Coroner (Mr. T.E. Cleland) found that Harry Leslie Strange 56, gardener of Garden terrace, Underdale, had died at the Royal Adelaide Hospital on August 11 from injuries received when his bicycle was struck by a motor car driven by Joseph Henry Thomas, fitter, of Blackburn avenue. Cowandilla, at the corner of Garden terrace and Holbrook's road, Underdale, on that day. Saying that the conduct of Thomas inevitably came into consideration, the Coroner said that he did not wish to make any comment, and directed that the evidence be forwarded to the Crown Prosecutor who would take what action he deemed necessary. On the grounds that his evidence might tend to incriminate him. Thomas refused to answer any questions. Constable Thomas Edwin Doddrell said that the deceased was wearing gum boots up to his knees and a long overcoat, which in his opinion, would affect a person's ability to ride a bicycle. It had been raining just before the accident, and conditions were overcast. Herbert Arthur Freer of Davenport terrace Hilton, a passenger in Thomas's car, who said that a car had obscured the cyclist who, it appeared, had waited for the car to pass and then cycled into the path of Thomas's vehicle. Thomas's vehicle was travelling at about 25 10 30 m.p.h. and was about 10 feet from the deceased when he was first seen. Although the brakes were applied immediately, nothing could have been done to avoid hitting the cyclist. An eyewitness, Douglas George Woodroff, of Lane-street, Richmond, told the Coroner that he was quite sure there was no other car which would interfere with Thomas's view of the deceased. If the driver of the car had been keeping a proper look-out, he should have avoided the cyclist. Mr. E. W. Palmer appeared for the relatives of the deceased, and Mr. R. F. Newman for Thomas.
