Quorn Mercury (SA : 1895 - 1954) Fri 31 Jan 1936
Obituary
MR. JOHN HILLMAN
By the passing of Mr John Hillman at Quorn on Monday, January 27, the north and Eyre's Peninsula lost one of its earliest pioneers. Born at Edwardstown in 1849, he was the second son of the late Mr and Mrs John Hiilman. He was educated in the district, and when a young man went to Port Lincoln and worked for Mr Sinclair, who had taken up a large area of country as a grazing proposition. Subsequent'y he was engaged to drive the mail coach from Port Lincoln to the Burra, where the copper mines were in full production and which at that time was the head of the north line. After many years, he got tired of the rough life as existed with the opening up of new country, and went to live at Bowden. About 27 years ago he again came north as manager of a farm for Mr C. Stacey in the Hundred of Palmer. Subsequently he went to reside at Bruce and resided there for some years. About seven years ago he retired to Quorn, where be lived up to the time of his death. He was of a retiring disposition, and his favorite pastime was reading. He was twice married and of the first union four sons and two daughters survive, viz - Mr Clarice Hillman (Yumila, South East), Mr Wm Hillman (Ascot Park), Mr John Hillman (Mannum), Mr Stan Hillman (Jamestown), Mrs E. Langham (Fullarton), and Mrs J.B. Currie (Port Pirie). Of the second marriage, a widow, foursons and four daughters survive. They are:- Mr Edward Hillman (Pimbaacla, West Coast), Mr Les Hillman (Pitina, West Coast), Mr James Hillman (Purlubie, West Coast, Mr Albert ("Chum") Hillman (Quorn), Mrs C.L. Schmidt (Willowie), Mrs H.T hughes (Willowie), Mrs E. Norman (Orroroo), and Miss Marjory Hillman (Jamestown).
The remains were interred in the Quorn cemetery on Tuesday, the Rev D. I. M. Anthony officiating at the graveside. The pallbearers were all Bruce friends -- Messrs G. H. Voigt, Allen Yoigt, H. O. Abbott, and Len Hilder.
