Taranaki Daily News 28 July 1909 OAONUI. On Friday evening, in the hall, a farewell social, organised by the school committee, was tendered to Mr. and Mrs. A. V. Sims and family, who will be leaving in a few days for Ngaire, Mr. Sims having been appointed headmaster of the school there. There was a large attendance, and a pleasant evening was spent. At about midnight supper, provided by the ladies in their usual bounteous style, was handed round, after which Mr. J. Young, chairman of the School Committee, on behalf of the committee and residents of Oaonui . . . Dancing was kept up with vigor till 3 o'clock, to excellent music supplied by Mr. K. Cannell (piano) and Mr. D. Duncan (violin), extras being kindly played by Mrs. S. Sefton. Card tables were provided for non-dancers. The duties of M.C.'s were ably carried out by Messrs H. Young and C. McQueen.
Hawera & Normanby Star 5 August 1914 AWATUNA. (From Our Own Correspondent.) The much talked of and looked forward to plain and fancy dress ball took place in the Awatuna Hall last Friday night, when there was a very large attendance, visitors being present from Auroa, Riverlea, Te Kiri, Opunake, and all round. The floor was in perfect order, while the music supplied by Cannell's orchestra was all that could be desired. There were several handsome fancy dresses, which added a picturesque effect to the decorated hall during the scene of the grand march. The hard-working committee have every reason to feel proud of the results which crowned their labors. The following appeared in fancy dresses and looked exceedingly well: -Mrs A. Smith, Maori maiden; Mrs W. Smith, Maori maiden; Mrs Bowman, Highland lassie; Miss Voullaire, Spanish girl; Miss Collins, French peasant; Mr Ross, Highlander; Mr J. Travels clown; Mr F. Nicholson, Chinaman; Mr L. Corey, Turk. Messrs M. Bourke and L. Corey carried out the duties of M.C.'s in a most creditable manner; while the catering of the supper, being in the hands of Mr Silby, was a sufficient guarantee of its excellence. As elsewhere, the milking season is again starting, and bears evidence of being another successful year. There has been quite an exit of settlers lately, while a number of newcomers have taken their places. Prior to their-departure a number of friends met at the residence of Mr and Mrs Percy Phillips and presented Mrs Phillips with a handsome travelling rug and Mr Phillips with a razor and a pipe. Mr Phillips, who suitably replied, has always been most willing in assisting at social gatherings in furthering the interests of school affairs, so that they will be greatly missed in the district.
Hawera & Normanby Star, Volume LXIX, Issue 0, 7 October 1915 OPUNAKE. (From Our Own Correspondent.) SOCIAL. The usual weekly Daphne Assembly was held on Monday night, and was fairly well attended. The floor was in perfect order, and first-class music was supplied by Mr K. Cannell; extras were played by Miss Trotter, the duties of M.C were carried out by Mr A Aitken in his usual capable manner. A euchre party was held by the Young Ladies' Church of England Patriotic Association in the Church school on Tuesday night and was well attended. Hawera & Normanby Star, Volume LXXII, Issue 0, 30 June 1917 OPUNAKE. (From Our Own Correspondent.) PRESENTATIONS On Tuesday evening, at the conclusion of the Musical Society's practice, advantage was taken to make two presentations. Mr Thorpe president of the society, stated that the members had been highly delighted at the able and tactful manner in which the conductor, Rev. R. B. Gosnell, had wielded the baton, and were desirous of showing their appreciation. He asked Mr Gosnell to accept a silvermounted baton, and hoped that he would long continue to act as conductor. Mr Gosnell, in replying, said he had performed his duties for his love of the work, and was pleased to know that the members were satisfied with him as a conductor. The gift was an agreeable surprise, for which he expressed his warmest thanks. Mr Thorpe then called upon Mr Cannell, pianist, to accept a gold-mounted topaz pendant as a small taken of appreciation for many kindnesses shown to members, pointing out that he was always on hand to assist individuals or quartettes at extra practices and was practically the mainstay of the society. Mr Cannell suitably responded. PATRIOTIC DANCE. On Wednesday evening a dance inaugurated by the Young. Ladies' Guild, was held on behalf of the patriotic fund. The evening was fine, and the attendance was excellent. Cards were arranged for non-dancers, and aboul 60 couples took part in dancing to music provided by Mr Cannell, assisted by several willing volunteers. Misses Looney and G. Wallis made most efficient M.C.'s. The net proceeds amounted to £7 2s.
