The Express & Telegraph (Adelaide) Wednesday 29 August 1882 PROTECTION AND IMMIGRATION MEETING AT PORT ADELAIDE. A public meeting ctdled by the Port Adelaide branch of the National Reform League was held in the Working Men's Hall, Port Adelaide on Tuesday evening, August 28, "to consider the subject of encouraging local industries and the immigration question." . . . Mr. W. Stephens seconded, and said that it was a great shame that the working classes were brought out to the colony, and on their arrival here were sent to work on the railway lines at 6s. per day. (Voice- "4s. 6d. a day.") The time had come when the working classes should make themselves heard. The laboring classes would never get proper representation until they sent in their own men and paid them. (Applause). Mr. James Moore supported, and said that they had been taxed to bring out immigrants, and were at the present time asked to contribute towards their support until they procured work. Immigration should be stopped for ten years. Mr. M. George, who stated that he was "an immigrant by the Romsdal, said that previous to leaving home he read the Agent - General's pamphlets, which gave glowing accounts of the colony. He could now see plainly that they were nothing but a dodge to reduce wages in the colony. There should certainly he warnings sent home to dissuade people from emigrating. All the immigrants by the last ship expected to do well in the colony, but the greater, number were now knocking about with nothing to do. . . .
