The Advertiser Saturday 26 April 1952 Death Notice: BAILS.- On April 25 John (formerly of Clare), husband of the late Laura Bails and father of Gordon, of 750 Port road, Beverley. Aged 91 years.
Funeral Notice: BAILS.- The Friends of the late Mr. John Bails, formerly of Clare, are respectfully informed that his Funeral will leave his late residence, 750 Port road, Beverley, on Monday, at 11.30 a.m., for the Cheltenham Cemetery. F.T. Elliott & Sons Hindmarsh. LU466B.

Bails Mr. John Bails, of Port road, Beverley, who died yesterday, aged 91, was Mayor of Clare during the 'Back to Clare' celebrations in 1938. He was a store keeper in the town for 30 years. Earlier he had worked for many years on the trading vessels Queen and Pyap, on the River Murray. A justice of the peace for about 40 years, Mr. Bails was a life member of the Justices' Association. He was educated at Prince Alfred College and was the oldest surviving old scholar. Mr. Bails leaves a son, Mr. Gordon Bails, who was Mayor of Clare in 1940-45.
Northern Argus (Clare, SA : 1869 - 1954) Wed 30 Apr 1952 Death of Mr. John Bails. FLAG FLIES AT HALF MAST AT CLARE TOWN HALL ON SATURDAY LAST. Regret was expressed at Clare on Sat., April 26th when it became known that Mr. John Bails, late of Red Stores, Clare, had died at the grand old age of 91 years, in Adelaide. He was well known and highly respected citizen of Clare for over 30 years where he conducted a General Store business in the premises now occupied by Mr. J. T. Canavan. As a townsman he was in terested in all things for the advancement and wellbeing of the town, and during his term of Mayor 1927-29 he tried hard to get a water supply for Clare the sites being at Emu Flat and Spring Farm; but after holes had been tested etc. these sites were turned down by the Councils and people of that period. He was Mayor of Clare during the 'Back to Clare' Celebrations, which under his guidance were an outstanding success in 1928. Before he came to Clare he was a well-known figure on the River Murray, he having worked for many years on the trading vessel 'Pyap.' He was educated at Prince Alfred College, and was the oldest surviving old scholar; and was a staunch adherent of the Clare Methodist Church. As a Justice of the Peace he was well known for his integrity and. thoughtfulness, he being a Justice for 40 years. He was recognised as a fine businessman, and on many occasions acted as valuator for firms and companies in disposing and taking over stores, in all parts of the State. His wife predeceased him a few years ago. With his only son Mr. Gordon Bails they had the unique distinction of both being Mayors of Clare. Mr. John Bails 1927-29, and Mr. Gordon Bails 1941-46. (Information Courtesy Lance Bails) John7 worked on the Murray River for Charles Oliver on boats "QUEEN" for 8 years at Milang & Lake Alexandrina and "PYAP" which was built about 1897 trading between Morgan SA and Wentworth, NSW.
He then moved to Tarcowie, then onto Clare.
Owned the "RED STORE" in Clare.
