The Kadina and Wallaroo Times (SA : 1888 - 1954) Wed 27 Mar 1929
THE LATE MR. JOSEPH BAILS.
The passing of Mr. Joseph Bails removes one of the early pioneers of Yorke's Peninsula. He was a bootmaker by trade but more interested in mining, and devoted most of his time in that line. He went to Kadina in 1861, and was connected with several copper mines, notably the Devon Consols. He sold his boot business to Mr. Bromley (afterwards owned by Mr. F. Nicholls) and went farming about four miles out of Kadina. He sold out after some years and went to live at Alberton, and from there on to Mannum where he carried on a store-keeping business for some years. The love for mining again appealed to him and he went to Silverton, Teetulpa, and Broken Hill, and then, on to West Australia. When 65 years of age he walked from Geraldton to Murchison (250 miles) with seven others; Supplies were at a high price, 6d a Ib. being the price of salt, and 5/- was the price of a cabbage. He and his party found the Golconda Mine and the Island Eureka on Lake Austin. He returned from the West 27 years ago and has since lived in Wayville and Unley. He was born at Newcastle-on-Tyne, England in 1837, and came to Australia in the ship "Omega" in 1854, and took a keen interest in politics and cricket. He was one of the guarantors in getting the first English Eleven to visit South Australia where they played the first match on the racecourse betweren Kadina and Wallaroo, Mr Bails being one of the 22 who played against W.G. Grace's team. At the "Back to Kadina" celebrations, in 1922, Mr Bails was a prominent figure, and renewed friendships with many old residents. He was a Freemason, and at one time visited the Clare Lodge. He has left four daughters, Mesdames J. Ladyman (West Australia), A.S. Hopkins, S.V. Brown, and Miss Bails (Unley), and two sons, Messrs J. Bails (Clare), and Ernest Bails (Adelaide).
